Microsoft’s Clippy-like Mico character is no longer the face of Copilot

Microsoft has removed Mico, the animated yellow blob from its Copilot voice interface, and will no longer display the avatar during conversations. A support page confirms the character is moving to the Learn Live platform, where it will interact with educational content rather than user chat. This change follows a brief period starting last October when Mustafa Suleyman introduced the figure to give the service a distinct identity through real-time facial expressions.

The decision marks another step in Microsoft’s history of retiring virtual assistants, joining predecessors like Clippy, Cortana, and Rover. Removing the character simplifies the user experience by eliminating visual distractions during voice interactions. It also signals a shift away from anthropomorphising software tools towards a more utilitarian approach to artificial intelligence.
