Microsoft releases new Nvidia-chip AI PCs with revamped Windows 11

Nvidia has officially launched the Surface Laptop Ultra and the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, two new machines built around its RTX Spark chip that run on a modified version of Windows 11.

The lineup and pricing

Microsoft announced the hardware details on Wednesday in San Francisco. The Surface Laptop Ultra offers two starting configurations. The base model costs $2,600, while the version with the more powerful chip begins at $3,700. Customisation options for memory and storage push the price up to $5,900. The highest specification is currently out of stock.

The Surface RTX Spark Dev Box is a workstation variant starting at $6,000. It includes development tools such as VS Code, GitHub Copilot CLI, WSL, and PowerShell 7.

Local AI execution

Both devices are designed to run AI models locally on the machine. The hardware modifications, including superior cooling and unified memory, allow the CPU and GPU to handle these tasks without sending data to the cloud. Microsoft states that this processing happens for free.

The operating system includes a feature called Execution Containers. This function helps sandbox AI agents. Satya Nadella confirmed that this update will be available for all Windows 11 users.

Orchestration over models

Nadella noted that possessing a model is not enough. The system requires orchestration and memory that exists outside the model itself. The new layer must combine multiple models with context, memory, and an action space.

Microsoft is enabling this capability for its own applications and for any other agent built on the platform.

Targeting developers

The devices are clearly aimed at developers. Microsoft is offering a trade-in bonus of up to $1,000 for existing MacBook Pro owners. This incentive addresses the fact that many developers and AI enthusiasts in Silicon Valley have switched to Apple hardware.

Despite the focus on development, the company states the powerful graphics processing is also capable of content creation, video processing, and gaming.

Other announcements

Dell also revealed specifications for its Dell XPS 16 Creator Edition, which uses the same Nvidia RTX Spark architecture. Pre-orders are now open for delivery in later October. The price is set at $3,800, available at Best Buy.

What it means

The shift to local execution changes the workflow for creators. Users can run complex agents directly on their hardware without relying on internet connectivity. The trade-in offer suggests Microsoft expects significant competition from Apple in the developer market.
