Microsoft launches its own cybersecurity model MAI-Cyber-1-Flash but still depends on OpenAI for the toughest tasks

Microsoft has released MAI-Cyber-1-Flash, a compact artificial intelligence model designed to identify security flaws within large codebases. The system integrates into the company’s multi-agent infrastructure and scores 96 percent on the CyberGym benchmark. This result places the model twelve points ahead of Mythos and higher than both Gemini and GPT. Microsoft states that operational costs should fall by 50 percent because the new model handles 90 percent of routine tasks. Only the most difficult cases are forwarded to GPT-5.4 for resolution. This approach relies on the MAI-Thinking-1 line to manage the bulk of the workload.

The strategy marks a shift in Microsoft’s role from exclusive distributor to an orchestrator of various AI tools. The company now advocates for open weights after years of growing Azure through a partnership with OpenAI. While Microsoft retains OpenAI for complex reasoning, the new setup highlights the practical value of specialising models for specific security functions. This move is supported by the launch of Perception, an agent-based system that monitors threats in real time using data from over 100 trillion daily security signals and 1.6 million customers.
