OpenAI has updated the model powering the voice mode in the ChatGPT iPhone app. The previous system relied on a GPT-4o era version with knowledge cut off in 2024, which limited its utility as a brainstorming partner. The new GPT-Live model can now delegate harder tasks to GPT-5.5 for web search and complex reasoning. It maintains conversation flow while these background operations occur.
This upgrade addresses a core frustration where the old model lacked current information and occasionally interrupted users with inappropriate laughter. The new system fixes this behaviour and allows for longer, more natural interactions. OpenAI confirmed they adjusted the model after reports of the rude interrupting laugh during preview access. The company plans to update the backend model continuously as new frontier versions release.
* GPT-Live runs on GPT-5.5 at launch
* Background tasks do not break the conversation flow
* Knowledge cutoff extends beyond 2024
