Hackers can target and breach accounts on popular AI platforms including ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity.
TechCrunch has published a guide to help protect users if they suspect a breach on social networks, messaging apps, or AI services. The following steps explain how to check whether your AI accounts have been compromised.
Standard advice remains to use unique passwords stored in a password manager and enable multi-factor authentication (MFA). This ensures that even if a password is stolen, a second piece of information is required to log in.
ChatGPT and Perplexity offer MFA options. Claude does not, because Anthropic‘s chatbot sends a login link to your email address instead of requesting a password.
All three platforms provide similar methods to identify suspicious devices. The process for each follows.
ChatGPT
To check your ChatGPT account, open it in a browser. Click your username in the bottom-left corner. Navigate to Settings, then Security and Login. Select Active Sessions.
This view displays where your account is currently logged in. If you recognise no device, log out of that specific session. You may also choose to log out all devices.
If you wish to change your password, you must log out first.
Return to the ChatGPT website. Click Log in in the bottom-left corner. Enter your email address. Select Forgot password, then Continue.
ChatGPT sends an email with a six-digit code. Enter this code on the login page. Click Continue. Enter a new password.
You can also click reset your password in the email you received to view official instructions.
Claude
Open Claude in a browser. Click your username in the bottom-left corner. Select Settings, then Account. This displays Active sessions.
If you do not recognise a session, hover over it. Click the three vertical dots on the right. Select Log out or Terminate.
You may also click Log out of all devices.
You will then be able to log back in using your email address. You will receive an email with a login link. Claude does not use passwords, so there is no password to change.
Perplexity
Perplexity does not display where you are logged in.
If you suspect a breach, go to Perplexity in your browser. Click your username in the bottom-left corner. Select All settings. Click Sign out of all sessions, then Confirm.
Log back in by entering your email address. You will receive an email with a unique six-digit code. Enter the code on the website to log in, or click the Sign in button in the email to log in directly.
What it means
Users must check active sessions regularly because Perplexity hides this information by default. The lack of passwords on Claude means security relies entirely on email links and session termination. Regularly logging out of all devices is the safest option if you suspect a breach.
