Google’s Project Suncatcher satellite successfully executed its first on-board AI response from orbit. The craft, which carries custom Tensor Processing Units running the Gemma 4 model, generated a haiku after receiving a specific prompt. The output read “Blue marble below / Data streams in silent grace / Starlight feeds my core.” Google also tested other space-themed limericks and telemetry queries during this initial validation run. This event marks a practical step toward the initiative’s goal of placing data centres in space.
The demonstration confirms that running large language models in low Earth orbit is technically feasible without relying on ground-based connectivity. By processing requests directly on the satellite, Google reduces latency for future applications that require instant analysis of remote data. The project aims to eventually support high-speed internet delivery and real-time environmental monitoring from orbit.
* The satellite was launched earlier this year as part of an experimental initiative.
* The on-board system successfully booted up the required hardware components.
* Future tests will focus on more complex data processing tasks.
