Google has confirmed it will completely disable Search for K-12 student accounts in schools that refuse to enable its AI tools. During a broader education update on Tuesday, the company stated that access to Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom, and Google Search would be entirely off unless administrators explicitly turned them on. Chris Phillips, Google’s vice president of education, explained to the New York Times that Search and AI are deeply integrated, meaning schools cannot toggle Gemini-powered features off without also disabling the search engine itself.
This move creates a binary choice for educational institutions regarding digital access. Schools wishing to block generative AI must accept the loss of standard search functionality for students. The policy effectively ties essential web research capabilities to the adoption of specific proprietary models within the Google ecosystem. This restriction limits the ability of districts to maintain a neutral stance on AI while preserving basic internet access for their learners.
* Search is disabled for all student accounts if AI features are turned off
* Administrators cannot selectively disable Gemini without losing search
* The policy applies to K-12 accounts across participating districts
