DoorDash launches an AI agent you can text to order food

DoorDash announced on Wednesday that it is launching a text-to-order AI agent allowing users to place food orders directly through Apple Messages. The tool interprets natural language prompts such as “order my usual” to execute specific past transactions. Users can request particular dishes or ask for local recommendations, with the system searching nearby spots and suggesting a cart based on the query. The agent also sends photos of the recommended food and manages mixed dietary preferences or varying quantities for group orders.

This move aims to distinguish DoorDash from competitors Uber Eats and Grubhub by reducing the friction of opening dedicated applications. It aligns with a broader industry shift toward personal AI agents that handle tasks without requiring users to navigate complex websites. The feature is currently available via a waitlist for customers in the U.S. DoorDash simultaneously announced testing of delivery drones with select restaurants in Northern California.
