Neill Blomkamp has released “Nightborne,” a thirteen-minute short film generated entirely by artificial intelligence. The science fiction horror piece was constructed using the Seedance 2.0 video generation model, with the director guiding every frame through text prompts. The documentary style follows a US pilot presumed dead and a secret military programme returning fallen soldiers to combat. Thirty-two real faces and voices appear under licensing agreements, while human artists supplied the concept art. Blomkamp stated on X that he intends to shoot a full-length feature in this same format. He also founded Barley Studios, a new AI film studio that succeeds Oats Studios, which makes traditional films.
This project highlights a shift in production methodology rather than solving the industry’s ethical dilemmas. Skepticism remains high regarding training data sourced without consent, potential job losses, copyright issues, and fears of declining quality. The work demonstrates that AI is gaining ground as a production tool despite these concerns. Blomkamp’s approach proves a human director can retain creative control over synthetic media.
