ChatGPT claws back web traffic share to 55.5 percent as Gemini’s brief comeback fades

Similarweb data indicates ChatGPT has recovered its position as the leading destination for AI chatbot web traffic, rising from 52.7 percent to 55.5 percent over the last three months. This gain comes as Google Gemini’s recent surge in popularity recedes, with its share of web visits dropping from 27.8 percent to 25.6 percent. The figures show significant year-over-year decline for OpenAI, which fell from 73.3 percent, while competitors like Anthropic‘s Claude have expanded their footprint from 1.9 percent to 9.3 percent. Other models including DeepSeek, Grok, Copilot, and Perplexity account for a small fraction of the total market.

These statistics measure only website visits and exclude mobile interactions that bypass standard web browsers. Google likely directs many Gemini users through its Android ecosystem, where push notifications open the app directly rather than generating a web link. OpenAI is simultaneously promoting its dedicated mobile application and the new ChatGPT Work desktop version, neither of which appear in these metrics. This distinction highlights the limitations of using web traffic as the sole indicator of overall adoption.

  • Web traffic excludes direct app launches via push notifications
  • OpenAI and Google are actively expanding non-web user interfaces
  • Claude has grown significantly while ChatGPT regains lost ground
