Google’s Gemini is losing market share to ChatGPT and Claude according to new market data

Pangram data shows Google’s Gemini model market share fell from 12 percent to 1.9 percent in July 2026, while OpenAI held over 50 percent and Anthropic rose to 14.9 percent. Similarweb figures indicate Google’s overall website share dipped slightly to 26.8 percent, a figure that masks a much larger drop to 9.4 percent from the previous year. Google claims one billion monthly Gemini App users, but this metric does not reflect active engagement on the platform. The decline is consistent across different tracking methods, with Pangram noting the drop occurred primarily in writing tasks where Gemini has historically trailed competitors. OpenRouter data also points toward reduced usage, though that source skews toward open-weight models. Similarweb excludes mobile apps from its calculations. These trends coincide with recent leadership changes at Google DeepMind, where several senior figures departed, including chief executive Demis Hassabis.

The shift suggests users prefer established models for specific professional needs rather than adopting new tools from major tech firms. This preference may drive internal restructuring at Google as the company adjusts its strategy for artificial intelligence products. The data highlights a clear preference for existing solutions over newer entries in the market.

  • Anthropic gained ground mainly in technical and scientific fields
