Character.ai is launching three original microdrama series, joining a market already crowded with apps and social platforms chasing the trend.

The company is not just building a chat interface for these stories; older users can converse with the characters, ask questions, and engage in roleplay within the narratives.

The lineup

Three titles launch to begin the rollout:

  • Last Summer, a romance series
  • The Nighttime Game, a horror show
  • Eden Fall, a survival story similar to the Hunger Games

Character.ai states that AI production tools built these dramas. The long-term plan involves converting these studio-led workflows into tools that allow users to create their own characters and series.

“Starting with a studio-led model, c.ai Series lets our production team develop the format, refine the workflow, and understand what audiences want from Character-native Microdrama entertainment. Over time, the goal is to turn those learnings and workflows into creator tools, enabling users to make their own series from original Characters and share them with a global audience,” a company spokesperson told TechCrunch.

This move follows a broader shift toward entertainment features. In April, the startup introduced Lorebook, a tool for generating world-building information characters can reference. It also launched Books, allowing users to insert themselves into classic literature or role-play as existing characters.

On Thursday, the company announced testing for c.ai FM, which enables the creation of audio series, and c.ai Reads for fiction writing. The audio feature is currently available to select users via the experimental c.ai Labs program, where professional writers are reportedly using it to build serialized audio dramas.

Data from Sensor Tower supports the demand. Users spent more than 950 minutes on Character.ai each month during the first half of 2026.
