Apple is enabling Siri AI to execute actions within third-party applications as part of the iOS 27.3 update rolling out on Tuesday. Under this Developer Preview, developers can integrate Siri AI features to allow the voice assistant to draw on personal context, process natural language prompts, and utilise on-screen awareness to complete requests. A new “app skills” feature lets developers combine multiple tasks into a single action, meaning users will not need to specify an app name when asking Siri to perform functions like sending a message or booking a ride.
This shift moves beyond the current model where Siri operates within a walled garden of native Apple services. By granting access to external software, the update aims to make the assistant feel more integrated with the wider ecosystem of installed apps. The change relies on existing permission frameworks rather than altering how data is stored or how APIs function internally. It represents a step toward a more unified interaction model without changing the underlying privacy architecture or account security measures.
- Updates are currently available only to developers in the Developer Preview.
- Users must explicitly grant permissions for specific app integrations.
- Native Apple apps will retain full access while third-party adoption depends on developer implementation.
