Anthropic has released the Model Hardware Standard, a set of standardised drivers intended to allow AI agents to control physical devices beyond computer screens. The research preview currently focuses on scientific environments where researchers must coordinate disparate equipment such as rotating lasers, microscopes, and cameras for experiments on memory formation. By providing a common interface and data format, the system removes the need for bespoke translator programs between these components. Anthropic states this approach could reduce experimental setup time from weeks or months to hours or minutes. The initiative emerged after a technical staff member observed neuroscientist Arco Bast successfully linking various laboratory instruments at the HHMI Janelia Research Campus in Ashburn, Virginia. Kemeny noted that this method could theoretically enable AI to run any science experiment globally. The standard aims to bridge the gap between digital intelligence and physical machinery by simplifying the integration process for hardware that previously required custom software for every connection.
