Anthropic extends free Fable 5 access for subscribers as OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol heats up the pricing war

Anthropic has extended free access to Claude Fable 5 for Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers until 19 July 2026. The model was originally scheduled to switch to a pay-per-use model today, but the company has allowed users to continue using it without extra cost. Subscribers can now allocate up to 50 per cent of their weekly usage limit to the model. After the extension period ends, users must pay with credits or switch to a different system. Anthropic has also extended a similar 50 per cent boost to Claude Code limits through the same date. Fable 5 consumes the usage quota significantly faster than other Claude models.

This move is a direct response to increasing pricing pressure from competitors. OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol arrives bundled with a standard ChatGPT subscription and costs less through the API. Industry reports suggest the new model is more token-efficient than current offerings. Anthropic cannot rely on the performance of Claude Opus 4.8 alone to maintain market share against budget-tier rivals. Competitors such as GLM 5.2, Meta’s Spark 1.1, and Grok 4.5 are gaining ground on price.

* Extension applies to Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans
