AI agents take over at SETI’s Allen Telescope Array, scanning for extraterrestrial intelligence

SETI researchers at the Allen Telescope Array in Northern California have deployed AI agents to steer the telescope and analyse radio signals in real time. The system relies on Nvidia’s Holoscan platform to process data at up to 2.4 terabits per second, reducing tasks that previously took weeks to just hours. This setup allowed the team to detect a pulsar in the Crab Nebula in real time, marking a first for the project. The group now plans to test open-source software capable of running locally on edge devices, potentially for future sensors on the far side of the Moon. Despite this technical progress, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence remains unchanged, as no signals from alien civilisations have been identified since the first experiment in 1960.

The shift to automated processing addresses the sheer volume of data generated by modern radio telescopes. Human analysts cannot manually scan the spectrum fast enough to identify rare events, so machines must handle the initial filtering. This approach does not alter how scientists formulate hypotheses or interpret final results, but it accelerates the initial detection phase.

* Nvidia’s Holoscan platform handles real-time signal processing.
* A pulsar in the Crab Nebula was detected automatically.
* Future tests will focus on edge computing for lunar sensors.
