ADDAC System is launching the Four String Series, a modular synthesiser system designed to be played with physical strings.
The Portuguese brand has announced a range of hardware that integrates actual strings into a Eurorack chassis. The concept stems from a desire to merge lap steel guitar mechanics with synthesiser technology. Modules sit beneath the strings, allowing them to be plucked or vibrated from below. Users can expand the setup as needed.
The core component is the ADDAC120 Headstock and Bridge module. It elevates the strings enough to accommodate the electronics underneath. The unit supports string gauges up to 0.055 and includes four locking tuners. The price is €210.
While a musician can pluck the strings by hand, the system can automate the action. The ADDAC124 Plectrums module features small metal picks that strike each string independently. It costs €280 and accepts triggers via buttons or MIDI input.
The ADDAC124 offers two operating modes. Pluck mode twangs the string normally. Harmonic mode produces a lighter tap suitable for harmonics.
Sound capture is handled by the ADDAC121 Humbucker module. This is not a standard electric guitar pickup. It uses an ADDAC122 Quadrophonic Pickup configuration, placing a sensor on every string. This setup allows for independent volume control on each string.
Other modules affect the strings physically. The ADDAC126 Rotary Exciter generates a rotating magnetic field. It excites strings that match the motor’s rotation speed. The ADDAC127 Ebow Slider provides a similar effect using a harness and sliding mechanism.
The ADDAC125 Strings Mute module dampens unwanted vibrations. The company compares the sound to a palm mute. A servo motor raises and lowers a piece of foam to control the string vibration without requiring hands.
For those who prefer a bow, there is a Bow Arch Attachment. This piece fits onto the headstock and raises the two middle strings. The adjustment makes it easier to play individual strings while using a bow.
All components fit into the ADDAC120F Strings Frame. Priced at €360, this custom-built frame holds the available modules. It includes a dedicated power supply and provides a base for further expansion.
The Four Strings Series begins shipping in July. Further details are available on the ADDAC System website.
What it means
This hardware removes the need for an external interface to trigger string sounds. A musician can play the strings directly or use the built-in automation. The modular format allows for complex signal routing within the Eurorack case.
