Wildwood’s director says AI is ‘antithetical to everything that we are at this studio’

Travis Knight, director of the stop-motion film *Wildwood*, has stated that artificial intelligence is antithetical to the studio’s entire working method. The movie required a team of over 1,000 artists to manipulate more than 230 puppets over five years, a process that prioritises physical presence and tangible craft over digital generation. Knight joined a growing number of filmmakers who reject generative tools because they cannot replicate the specific imperfections and human connection inherent in stop-motion animation.

This stance matters because it highlights a deliberate choice to maintain artistic integrity in an industry increasingly pressured to adopt faster, automated workflows. Laika’s approach ensures that every frame retains the weight of physical labour, distinguishing their output from the homogenised results often produced by machine learning algorithms.

* The film featured 36 distinct versions of the main character, Prue.
* Knight argues that AI lacks the capacity for genuine emotional expression.
* Laika continues to reject any form of automation in their production pipeline.
