Sandbar has raised $36 million for its Stream, a voice-enabled ring designed to avoid the fate of previous AI hardware by requiring manual activation rather than operating always-on. The startup, led by CEO Mina Fahmi, argues that the market has rejected devices that record continuously due to privacy concerns and social awkwardness. Fahmi, formerly of CTRL-labs, insists that keeping human control over when recording begins is essential for wearable technology to move beyond tech enthusiasts. The company chose to build custom hardware rather than modifying existing devices, acknowledging that off-the-shelf solutions lack the necessary form factor for discreet voice capture. This approach prioritises user comfort and battery life over the convenience of passive listening, addressing the main reasons earlier voice rings failed to gain traction.
The significance lies in Sandbar’s rejection of the passive recording model that has plagued the industry. By forcing the user to initiate the recording, the device avoids the ethical pitfalls of secret surveillance while ensuring the user remains aware of when data is being collected. This design choice directly targets the social acceptability barrier that has stopped many consumers from wearing AI hardware in professional or public settings. The strategy suggests that successful AI wearables must respect user agency rather than assuming constant accessibility is a feature.
