Tolan has secured $30 million in new funding to expand its operations.

The latest round

Union Square Ventures, Khosla Ventures, and Homebrew led the investment. This brings the total capital raised to $60 million. PitchBook estimates the company’s valuation at over $268 million, though the startup did not confirm the figure.

How it works

The application uses a cartoon avatar to assist users with daily tasks, relationship management, and emotional support. Access to the full feature set requires a paid subscription. The company reports annual recurring revenue in the double-digit millions.

More than 250,000 active users have held over 70 million conversations in the last year. The user base is roughly 70% female, with 40% identifying as parents. Anecdotal evidence suggests the tool appeals particularly to neurodivergent individuals seeking organisational or emotional assistance.

Why it stands out

Tolan appears to have avoided the pitfalls that plagued earlier projects. Friend, a pendant-based companion, faced intense criticism. Users described the experience as cringe-worthy, while The New York Times stated it was hated and Wired noted it lacked a soul.

Character.ai recently filed for bankruptcy after its founders joined Google. Remaining staff are moving to Disney, which acquired certain assets. In contrast, Tolan maintains a balance between being useful and avoiding the perception of being unnatural.

Competitive pressure

The startup faces growing competition from AI agents designed to plan and execute tasks rather than simply conversing. Meta launched Muse, an AI agent with a cute avatar, and plans to release a hardware version in the future.

Offering emotional support carries significant liability. Several lawsuits have been filed against general-purpose AI developers, alleging that chatbot interactions contributed to user suicides.

What it means

The funding validates a specific approach to the companion market: one that prioritises utility and safety over novelty. Success here depends on maintaining that balance while competing with agents that can actually perform work.
