Meta has begun rolling out a global update allowing Threads users to chat with Meta AI directly within their direct messages. This integration permits private conversations where users can share posts, images, links, and videos to ask follow-up questions or explore topics further. Previously, interaction was limited to public posts in select markets, similar to how Grok functions on X. The feature now mirrors availability found on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
The move aims to retain users inside the Meta ecosystem by reducing reliance on third-party assistants such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google Gemini. By positioning Threads as a destination for information and recommendations without leaving the app, Meta strengthens its rivalry with X. Users concerned about the volume of AI replies can mute the @meta.ai handle or use the “Not interested” option to hide specific responses. The company continues to test public feed interactions in certain regions while gathering feedback before wider expansion.
- Global rollout starts Monday
- Supports file and link sharing
- Mute option available for @meta.ai
