The AI Tamagotchis are coming

OpenAI and Meta plan to launch dedicated AI hardware devices within the next twelve months, targeting consumers with software agents designed to resemble companions rather than traditional tools. This strategy marks a significant departure from previous attempts at standalone AI gadgets, which have struggled with utility and faced considerable public scepticism. Both companies intend to use a nostalgic, toy-like aesthetic to mask the limitations of current artificial intelligence capabilities. OpenAI is collaborating with former Apple designer Jony Ive to create a physical form for its dot agent, while Meta is developing a similar approach for its Muse project.

The move attempts to bypass the recurring criticism that dedicated AI devices lack clear purpose. Previous products like the Humane AI Pin and the Friend have failed to find a stable market niche, often being dismissed as gimmicks. By framing the hardware as a digital pet, the firms hope to encourage users to overlook the device’s computational constraints and focus on the novelty of interaction. Success will depend entirely on whether consumers accept these agents as useful companions or reject them as unnecessary clutter.

  • Devices will feature cutesy designs intended to lower user expectations.
  • Both companies acknowledge the high failure rate of dedicated AI hardware.
  • Jony Ive is overseeing the physical design for OpenAI’s new agent.
