OpenAI’s Codex can now watch you work once and repeat the task forever

OpenAI has introduced a Record & Replay feature within the Codex app for macOS, allowing users to train an AI agent on a single workflow execution. The system captures actions performed by the human operator, such as uploading a video with metadata, generating a thumbnail, and adding subtitles, before converting this session into a reusable skill. Once trained, the agent can independently repeat the exact process without further intervention. This update arrives alongside other enhancements in version 26.616, including bulk actions for automation history and the ability to hand off threads between local and remote hosts to continue work on connected machines. The feature currently requires Computer Use to be enabled, which has been available in the European Union since mid-June. However, access remains restricted for users in the UK, the EU, and Switzerland at this time.

The significance of this development lies in its shift from reactive assistance to proactive automation. By enabling agents to learn complex, multi-step workflows from a single demonstration, OpenAI reduces the manual effort required to programme repetitive tasks. This capability transforms Codex from a simple coding assistant into a versatile tool for white-collar automation, potentially streamlining operations for businesses reliant on data entry or content management. The ability to transfer tasks between local and remote hosts further expands utility, allowing agents to operate across different physical machines seamlessly. While the feature is not yet available in the UK, its functionality suggests a growing trend towards agents that can observe and replicate human behaviour to handle routine administrative burdens.

* The new Record & Replay feature allows a single demonstration to create an automated skill for future use.
* Access to the feature is currently blocked in the UK, the EU, and Switzerland despite Computer Use being live in the EU.
* Users require a paid ChatGPT subscription to leverage the full capabilities of the Codex app and its automation tools.
