OpenAI has reopened its $200-per-month Pro subscription for new sign-ups while simultaneously halving the API credits provided per dollar spent. Thibault Sottiaux, an employee at the company, states that users should still achieve more output than previously possible because GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna launched this week at half the cost of their predecessors. The five-hour weekly usage cap has been removed entirely, allowing subscribers to distribute their monthly allowance however they prefer.
This adjustment marks a strategic shift from heavily subsidised subscriptions toward a pay-per-use model similar to Microsoft’s approach with Copilot in certain regions. Sottiaux argues that API prices will eventually fall sufficiently so that purchasing usage as needed becomes competitive with subscription tiers. This strategy aims to align revenue more closely with the actual value companies extract from AI services rather than relying on flat fees.
* New subscribers receive the full $200 monthly allowance without time restrictions.
* Existing API credits are reduced by fifty percent per dollar spent.
* GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna offer lower API costs than earlier models.
