OpenAI has deployed a new safety mechanism called Private Safety Processing to scan for abuse without retaining any customer information. The system identifies harmful patterns across multiple conversation threads while maintaining zero data retention. It sends only a narrow signal regarding activity type and severity back to the provider, ensuring actual inputs and outputs never leave the client environment. User data stays on local infrastructure or within encrypted storage controlled by customer keys. Aleah Houze, Head of Product Policy at OpenAI, noted that risks often emerge only after several exchanges have occurred. This approach contrasts with competitor Anthropic, which mandates a thirty day retention period for its most powerful models like Fable 5. A technical white paper detailing the architecture is scheduled for release in September.

This method addresses a primary concern for enterprises wishing to adopt advanced models without compromising data sovereignty.
