Current AI has released a Gap Map index documenting 421 specific open source products within the artificial intelligence sector. The non-profit organisation, backed by $400m in committed capital, categorises these items into 14 groups across three technical layers. The database includes 266 software tools, 85 models, 50 datasets, and 20 hardware projects created by 228 different entities. A further 24,400 artifacts remain uncategorised as they await individual research and citation.
The release is valuable primarily because the underlying data is published under an MIT license on GitHub. Developers can access 1,184 YAML files alongside the scripts used to gather them. This raw dataset allows independent researchers to build their own queries or visualisations without relying on the project’s specific interface. Community members have already exported a list of 16,185 tracked GitHub repositories into a CSV file for immediate exploration via Datasette Lite.
