Meta’s Muse is outpacing ChatGPT’s early mobile launch

Muse has already outpaced ChatGPT in mobile downloads within their first twelve days on the market, according to new figures from market intelligence firm Apptopia.

The comparison is limited to the United States and Canada, but the gap is clear. Muse recorded 1.8 million downloads in that window, while ChatGPT reached 1.3 million. The data comes from a specific subset of iOS downloads to ensure a fair comparison, as the two apps launched differently.

ChatGPT arrived globally on iOS only. Muse is available on both Apple and Google platforms but launched in the U.S. and Canada only. Apptopia adjusted the numbers to match these conditions, yet Muse still leads.

Overall, Muse has gathered 2.8 million installs globally in its first twelve days. The app moved from second place on the U.S. App Store immediately after launch to number one by Friday, according to Business Insider. Appfigures reported the app crossed the one million download mark at that time.

Daily active user numbers also favour the new app. In the United States, Muse has 642,000 daily users compared to 231,000 for ChatGPT. Even when restricting the metric to iOS alone, Muse holds 359,000 daily users, still ahead of the figures from ChatGPT’s launch period.

Apptopia provides third-party estimates and does not have direct access to Meta’s internal records. The firm notes these figures are general indicators rather than exact counts. However, they suggest Muse could become Meta’s next top application.

Meta previously used a cross-promotion strategy to launch Threads, which now has over 500 million users. That success relied on heavy marketing and deep integration into Instagram and Facebook. Muse is likely to receive similar support because it connects with those platforms and functions inside WhatsApp.

Apptopia does not have direct visibility into Meta’s advertising efforts. It did note that more than 95% of Muse’s users are also Facebook users, and 63% are Instagram users.

Meta has not released public figures regarding early adoption of the app. The company has not yet provided a comment on the new data.

What it means

Users making content with Muse can access the tool immediately on their phones without waiting for a global rollout. The app’s integration with existing Meta platforms means people can switch between social feeds and the AI tool without leaving their current apps.
