Meta has launched Muse Image, a new artificial intelligence tool for generating pictures built by Meta Superintelligence Labs.
The service carries the internal code name Mango and is available at no cost via the Meta AI app, Instagram Stories, and WhatsApp.
Capabilities mirror those of standard image generators: users can produce cartoonish or whimsical visuals. Meta suggests the tool includes preset prompts to help people who struggle to formulate original ideas.
Video demonstrations highlight practical applications, such as designing custom advertisements or experimenting with interior design. One clip shows a user checking how a secondhand sofa might fit in a garage. This feature integrates with Facebook Marketplace, the platform’s section for buying and selling used furniture.
The model also supports text-based editing. Users can generate images to share across Meta’s apps. The company states the system can create a mockup of a person standing before a historical landmark, remove unwanted people from a photo background, or generate a functional QR code using a custom prompt.
New AI effects for Instagram Stories, powered by Muse, allow users to apply custom filters to existing photographs.
Generation is free for everyday use. Once users exceed a specific limit, they must switch to a paid subscription plan.
Meta confirmed that Muse Video, an AI tool for making clips, is currently under development. The company has not provided further details on this project.
Meta has released several AI applications in the last year, including an assistant named Creator and Pocket, a tool for building video games. Critics have described the company’s overall strategy as vague, though it remains committed to heavy spending on AI infrastructure.
What it means
For everyday users, the change is simple: you can generate images and edit photos without paying, provided you stay within the free usage limits. The integration with Marketplace and Instagram Stories means the technology is already embedded into places where people shop and share content, rather than being a separate utility to visit.
