Phase 8 Add-ons, Sinevibes DSP, and NTS Mixer Preview
Deep in the forest of Superbooth earlier this month, Korg showcased several new additions, if you knew where to look. This included a compact NTS mixer, updated Sinevibes effects for Korg gear, and add-ons for the phase 8 “acoustic synthesizer,” including effects that can be 3D-printed.
Phase 8 Add-Ons
- Bass resonators were added to extend the low-frequency response of the instrument. Korg’s Berlin office also revealed an app created by Iarla Scaife (Berlin) and Keisuke Nohara (Tokyo), which allows you to create patterns, manage MIDI options, and access preset management via a visual editor.
- Hadrien Costrejean, from Paris, demonstrated 3D-printed “acoustic effects.” These physical effects open up new timbral possibilities for the phase 8 instrument. The physical effects are planned for public release, as is the web app that controls them.
Korg’s Bass resonators and visual editor app were special reveals at this year’s Superbooth. I hope to delve deeper into these in a future article. Bex Burch also collaborated with Korg on a custom phase 8 for her album, which was recorded in their Berlin offices.
NTS Mixer
The NTS family received a new addition — a cleverly designed compact mixer that looks more like something I’d use than even Korg’s existing volca mixer. It features multi-effects onboard and quick stereo mixing capabilities, with USB-C connectivity.
Like other NTS gear, this is easy to assemble as a no-solder, no-specialized-tools kit. More details on its design and functionality will follow soon.
Sinevibes for Korg
Sinevibes has been making the possibilities of Korg’s development kit accessible with their plug-ins. Artemiy demonstrated new updates for Sinevibes’ effects on microKORG2, including Droplet v2 for prologue, minilogue xd, NTS-1, NTS-1 mkII, NTS-3, and microKORG2.
The Droplet v2 update is sounding excellent. I plan to test the new features on the NTS-3 (the Kaoss Pad) for its performance controls, which are essential for me.
Other Highlights
- Custom speakers by KIKUNO from Amsterdam were showcased, with photos of them in use during the event.
- A special brunch was held after the main show, featuring a live performance by Bex Burch on her custom phase 8 instrument. Photos of this session and other collaborations were shared.
Thanks go to Rachel Aiello for setting up the live sets, Samantha Melnyk and Tatsuya Takahashi for their work on phase 8, and many others who contributed across the present and past team.
Key Takeaways
- Korg’s phase 8 instrument got some exciting new features at Superbooth.
- The NTS mixer is a cleverly designed compact unit with multi-effects and USB-C connectivity.
- Sinevibes has been making Korg’s development kit more accessible with their plug-ins, including Droplet v2 for prologue, minilogue xd, and the Kaoss Pad.
