Google announced a new universal Gemini agent designed to operate across apps and devices in the background. This tool launches within the Gemini Enterprise app, allowing users to chat with the agent and assign tasks from a single interface. The system integrates directly into Workspace applications like Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Calendar. Users can also interact with the agent from mobile devices, desktop computers, the web, and third-party platforms such as Slack or Microsoft 365. Because the agent runs in the cloud, it maintains consistent context across all connected environments. The announcement occurred during the Gemini at Work event on Thursday.
The primary value lies in centralising task management without requiring users to switch between multiple applications. By maintaining a continuous conversation history in the cloud, the agent remembers previous instructions regardless of which app is currently active. This reduces the friction of repeating context when moving between tools. The approach shifts the interaction model from isolated commands within specific software to a persistent digital assistant accessible from any entry point.
