Figma co-founder Dylan Field has stated that the model context protocol is not a perfect standard while the company simultaneously announced support for the open source specification. During the first Config conference in India, the design firm added twenty new partners to its ecosystem, including Amp, ClickUp, Linear, and Notion. This expansion comes despite Field’s previous criticism regarding how Anthropic handles resources created via the protocol. He noted on X that the debate between open and closed systems often ignores issues of asymmetric context sharing. Field later confirmed that Figma plans to support Pi, a tool mentioned by an MCP co-creator as lacking support from the design company.
Field explained that while Figma wants to open its ecosystem, he believes the protocol requires significant improvement. He argued that the current structure advantages frontier laboratories over other users. The primary reason for this cautious approach stems from security concerns regarding data exposure. Figma’s CEO clarified that exposing more data through MCP increases the chance of abuse. The company must consider these potential risks even though most users do not intend to use the data in a malicious way.

- Field believes the protocol currently favours frontier labs over standard users.
- The company prioritises security over full openness to prevent data abuse.
