Elon Musk throttles Grok Bot limits due to ‘unsustainably high’ costs

Over Halloween weekend, certain Grok Bot users discovered their weekly usage limits had unexpectedly hit maximum capacity despite minimal recent activity. Reports on X indicated usage levels surged from as low as 50% to 100% for some accounts. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk confirmed on Sunday that this was not a technical error but a deliberate adjustment.

The decision stems from the cost of serving the bot becoming unsustainably high relative to revenue. While SpaceX’s Super Intelligence division recently reported a profit of $431 million, that figure was reduced by $1.2 billion in one-time costs related to the acquisition of Cursor. Musk previously described Grok Bot as having the fastest growth of a product he has ever seen in his life, yet the financial model for that growth is now under pressure. The company has not yet shared details on how subscriber limits will change moving forward.

  • Weekly limits were raised to 100% usage for some users
  • Grok Bot revenue currently does not cover serving costs
  • Future access restrictions remain unannounced
