OpenAI announced today that ChatGPT Health now integrates with Epic’s electronic health record system, covering over 325 million patients. Clinicians can import data to ask questions about appointment notes, laboratory results, and medications. In some deployments, the tool lives directly within EHR workflows for pre-visit reviews and clinical timelines without leaving the patient chart. The integration grants read-only access only, meaning the AI cannot write back to health records.
The update also introduces a Healthcare Public Data plug-in to fetch information from sources like ClinicalTrials.gov and PubMed. This helps workers synthesise data for trial eligibility and medication identifiers. OpenAI maintains that despite these deep integrations, the software is not suitable for diagnosis or treatment. The company cites 4,300 physician responses across 27 use cases where 99.1% were safe, yet recent lawsuits allege the tool gave dangerous dosage advice.
